Eric B: The Architect of the Golden Age Sound

Louis Eric Barrier (known professionally as Eric B.) is an American record producer, DJ, and entrepreneur, best known as one half of the hugely influential Hip-Hop duo Eric B. & Rakim. Formed in 1986 in New York, the duo is universally recognized for ushering in the “Golden Age” of Hip-Hop by redefining both the lyrical and sonic standards of the genre.

Eric B. was the architect of their sound, credited with pioneering the sophisticated use of heavy James Brown samples and creating a signature “minimalist virtuoso” production style that was cool, understated, and incredibly funky.

Their debut album, Paid in Full (1987), is frequently ranked as one of the greatest Hip-Hop albums of all time. Other classic albums include Follow the Leader (1988) and Don’t Sweat the Technique (1992). Beyond music, Eric B. is an astute businessman with executive experience in the radio and record industries (including with BMG and CBS Radio).

He has also branched into acting, currently appearing in the CBS series Blue Bloods as Lt. Mike Gee, and is actively involved in community and political outreach.
